Poor diet is an increasingly serious problem in Britain, with the majority of people in England now classified as overweight or obese. Change4Life is a Government body that aims to reverse current trends and encourage lower levels of excess weight, and better health.
Supermeals, a Change4Life campaign, aimed to empower busy families to make better food choices with an easy to use recipe planning app. Originally launched in January 2012, the online tool was redesigned with the name BeFoodSmart in January 2013, with added functionality.
In collaboration with Essex-based agency Antbits, I was responsible for development of the rich user interface, and integration with server-side functionality, using Adobe Flash and Actionscript.
The primary aim of the web app is to simplify meal planning, by automatically suggesting seven days of meals. For each meal, images, recipes and nutritional values are provided. Meals can be swapped, too, allowing the plan to appeal to different tastes.
When the user is happy with their suggestions, they can download all the recipes as a PDF, including a full shopping list.
Redesigned in 2013, this iteration includes the “Meal Mixer” – an alternative way of planning a menu, which generates meal choices one day at a time.
Supermeals and BeFoodSmart enjoyed a massive publicity campaign, featuring celebrity endorsement and prime time TV ads. The recipe planner app had huge numbers of users, and was Antbits’ most successful web tool.
