Blenz is Canadian coffee shop franchise. Since opening their first location on Robson st, Vancouver, BC in 1992, they have expanded to over 60 locations, spread across Canada, Japan, and the Philippines.
Blenz approached me with the project of producing them a set of step-by-step drink recipe videos that they could use a training tool for new staff.
The challenge for this project was to create over 40 short and informative, yet entertaining recipe videos which could be easily understood by all new Blenz baristas.
To begin, I spent 3 days at Blenz head office, shooting the recipe videos in sequence and learning the process that goes into each and every beverage. I then took that footage home to my studio and began developing step-by-step scripts for each video, where I could voice over as the Barista on camera performed each step in the recipe.
My approach and tone for the videos had to stay within BLENZ brand and culture, but they also gave me the authority to inject in some of my personality. This involved some quirkiness, some fast-paced and interesting shots and little humour. My goal was to create something that would make new employees feel good about their decision to work for Blenz. I wanted to make them smile, maybe even laugh, and learn, all at the same time.
After some creative editing and a few revisions, the project turned out to be great success. The management team at head office was extremely pleased with final product, having now a series of highly educational, yet fun to watch, videos to train their future superstar baristas.
